Well Read Black Girl Book Club

Well Read Black Girl Book Club w/Glory Edim, at Source Booksellers! Join us for a great conversation! This event is a definite highlight during our 30th year in bookselling in Detroit!

Glory Edim is a cultural programmer and the founder of Well-Read Black Girl (WRBG), a Brooklyn-based book club and online community that celebrates the uniqueness of Black literature and sisterhood. The book club/celebration will focus on Wayward Lives: Beautiful Experiments, Intimate Histories of Social Upheaval. by Saidya Hartman

Saidiya Hartman would tell us to watch and listen to ordinary Black women. She is not romanticizing the margins, though she suggests that we can find romance — the implacable pursuit of freedom — within the margins’ constraints.

Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor ends her stellar book review of Wayward Lives in Los Angeles Book Review like this ~

Saidiya Hartman would tell us to watch and listen to ordinary Black women. She is not romanticizing the margins, though she suggests that we can find romance — the implacable pursuit of freedom — within the margins’ constraints.

We are honored that Glory Edim will host her WRBG Book Club at Source Booksellers. While she is with us we want to celebrate her work of making African American women writers visible and the success of her book.

Utibe Gautt Ate is a Black Cherokee and Nigerian writer, artist, and editor finishes her lively Los Angles book review of Well Read Black Girl book like this~

"In the end, we the readers realize that each essay in Well-Read Black Girlembodies Jemisin’s call to action: “So here is why I write what I do: We all have futures."

When We Were Arabs Book Talk

We are happy to be part of Massoud Hayoun's national tour for his book “When We Were Arabs.” We are very proud to bring this book/conversation to our community.  RSVP here.

About the book:

When We Were Arabs: A Jewish Family's Forgotten History is the stunning debut by non fiction writer and  journalist Massoud Hayoun. He shares his family history and explains his identity through retelling his grandparents story. He makes us aware that there was a time that when being an "Arab" did not mean you were Muslim.
